One Day Officiant License
📝 Eligibility & Authority
• Must be 18 years or older
• No residency requirement — you don’t have to live in NY or even in the town where the couple is marrying
• Authorized to solemnize a marriage anywhere in New York State
• License is valid only for the couple named in the application and expires after the ceremony or when the marriage license expires
🏛️ Application Process
• Apply through the same town or city clerk’s office where the couple is getting their marriage license
• No need to appear in person
• Clerk charges a $25 fee
• Application must include:
• Officiant’s name, DOB, address, email, and phone
• Couple’s names, DOBs, and addresses (matching their marriage license)

• One-day officiants are exempt from registration requirements in NYC that apply to other officiants
This law was signed by Governor Hochul in 2022 to make it easier for friends and family to officiate weddings without needing religious or political credentials.
